With that in mind, I really should think it more fitting if I ask Jack to write a few lines on it… or I’ll record the audio and pop it up here. Much, much better and fitting than a young pup like me trying to recite it in text format.

For now here’s a close up of the text in English…

<a

Aileen, from County Wexford, is a stranger to these parts and seeks assistance from people throughout Fingal in regard to placenames and their origins.

The significance of landscape is enshrined in placenames and there are thousands of examples of physical or natural features being referred to in placenames throughout Ireland.

It is Aileen’s intention to create new video works which relate to elements of the landscape which appear in placenames in the County. Her initial research has revealed a number of Fingal placenames which refer to landscape features, ranging from inland agricultural elements (Clonsilla means ‘Cluain Saileach’, or meadow of the Sallys) to coastal features such as a head (Howth, from the Norse ‘hofuth’, meaning ‘head’) or landing place (Portmarnock; ‘port’ is a bank of a river, or landing place). However, while a hill will still stand, other elements may have disappeared; bogland has been reclaimed, or tarmac and concrete now cover a meadow. Choosing placename meanings as a starting point to engage with the landscape points to our changing relationship with our environment and also highlights social and cultural change as many of the places we know best in English have Gaelic, Norse, or Anglo-Norman origins.

Aileen would like your assistance. She’s be delighted to hear from you if you have information on the meaning of a placename, and can identify the landscape feature it relates to. For instance The Naul is from the Irish ‘An Áill’, meaning cliff; in this instance Aileen wonders if this cliff still exists, and if so, would like to be shown it. You can contact Aileen on 087 7552593 or 053 9256885, or email aileenlambert@gmail.com

Following this research phase, Aileen will create video works in response to a number of selected landscapes throughout Fingal.

Although based in County Wexford, Aileen has undertaken numerous projects with various communities, rural and urban, over the past ten years. Most recently she produced a new publication and double CD for Mayo County Council entitled En Route (www.enroute.ie)

For more information on Aileen’s artistic practice see ...this time its really happening

some thought it would never happen. some thought it was never possible. In a town where the drop, the craic, the entire knowledge of what encapsulated community spirit and held it so tightly within its grasp had been left to wander idle for over 2 years…. It is, now, on the verge of what some may consider akin to poetry being given rock and roll status… a Hendrix like status, The Jim Morrison of Ballyboughal maybe… ? It is to be reborn, re-released, relaunched… it is to open!

The reality is people walk through the village and some don’t know their neighbours. O Connors pub was a mythical establishment that elimanted any mysteriousness over who, what or how that man was related. In one evening a family tree was discussed and on the back of the same beer mat the relativity theory was unravelled and reconstructed using that of a DNA molecule [deoxy-ribo-nucleic-acid].

What will there be? What’s it like? Who? What? Where and when? The rumours have started – but there’s only one way to put Marys, cousins, uncles, brothers, sister-in-law now known as Jim to the wrong…. I guess you’ll have to pop in and check it out for yourself!

One thing is for sure. Ballyboughal has something now that was lost for a while. A place where people new to the village can meet. A centre. A sense of community. A place to meet. A heart and above all a soul.
