Bally-Bogholes very own blow in Peter Donegan is (once again) doing Temple Street Childrens Hospital half marathon. It’s not exactly my scene but in the context of getting the word out and raising a few bob for a great, great cause – the very least I could do was put his post on Ballyboughal.net. There’s a recent enough and great reason why Temple Street Childrens Hospital is so close to my heart, but in short and for the moment this is a gig I am now doing, again.

It is with great sadness that we in Ballyboughal have hear of the recent passing of Fr. Gerry Canning RIP.

Fr Gerry served the community of Ballyboughal, Naul and Damastown for many years from late 90′s until his retirement some years ago.

It is with great sadness that we in Ballyboughal have hear of the recent passing of Fr. Gerry Canning RIP.

Fr Gerry served the community of Ballyboughal, Naul and Damastown for many years from late 90′s until his retirement some years ago.

Fr. Gerry was known to most parishioners simply as Gerry, and would always like you to address him so. A great man to support families at times of trouble, bereavement and indeed celebration he encouraged may of the youth of the village to get involved in their local community be that in sport social or simply pride of place. A very jolly man who would regularly entertain us with stories and telling jokes always a positive outlook. Last year Gerry made to one of the folk club nights and just wished he was back living in Ballyboughal that he might go every week.

Gerry was very encouraging to the revival of the church choir back in 1996 and indeed really encouraged our approach as a choir to the ceremonies and was totally behind the idea of our first Carol Service in modern times back in 1998 which is still being performed today as we look forward this years service on Wed 14th December.

It is a great honour for the people of Ballyboughal that Gerry has chosen this community a final resting place to be among so may people and the place he loved so well.

Funeral arrangements;

Removal Friday evening to Church of the Assumption Ballyboughal 7pm
Funeral Mass Saturday at 12 O’clock and afterward burial in local cemetery.

May he rest in peace.

I have asked Anon [not his/ her real name] permission if I could publish this email. Permission for this was granted, anonymously. Our response went as such:

A Chara Anon,

We are aware there are other clubs/ groups/ events etc taking place in Ballyboughal. In many cases we quite simply don’t have the details or specifics enough to officially or accurately announce. The other side I suppose is that it is not our [ie. that of ballyboughal.net] club, event or other and to announce on their behalf without say-so [?] may not be entirely the correct ethic/ manner. Any note here of news or other has been/ is generally, if it’s permitted to use the word, volunteered.

It may not a bad thing Anon to note that this website, like a lot of the groups is also voluntarily run and funded. Either or any group or gig which relies upon ones personally given time, deserves applause – if not an ovation.

In closing, I think it’s fair to say, we try our best and if this website were a decent 40th birthday bash/ party – we’d like to think it a case of the more the merrier.

A disco was held in the hall in the village and Katherina [I hope I spelt that right....], the childrens translator was on hand to explain why exactly was it was all happening.
