Duathalon Champion: Cian Delaney

Naas Triathlon Club put on a fantastic opener to the 2012 season this morning at Punchestown racecourse. The 3.5k run, 20k cycle and 3.5k run was tackled by over 230 competitors ranging from beginners to National Champions.
On the men’s side it was Cian Delaney of Fingal Tri Club who took victory ahead of 2011 Olympic Distance National Champion Joe Lynch. Gavin Crawford was close behind in 3^rd.
Aoife Lynch took the honours in the women’s race with a comfortable 2 minute margin over Tamara Maxantova in 2^nd. Denise Molloy rounded out the podium positions in 3^rd.

While the rest of the nation was being gripped by the exploits of the Irish rugby team, Ballyboughal had its eyes on a lesser known sport where a local hero was bringing home a bronze medal for his country. Cian Delaney has made a meteoric rise in the world of the Duathlon and is now a bronze medal winner at World Championship level after a magnificent performance in Gijon, Spain. Already a silver medal winner at European level, the Ballyboughal man took to the podium for a world bronze.

Yesterday Ballyboughal’s U15 Girls team created history with another Ballyboughal GFC triumph as they beat Cuala A 3-8 to 2-7 in Thomastown yesterday in the Tesco U-15 D3 Championship Final.

A huge congrats to all involved in the teams success.

Pitch and Putt: George McDonnell memorial

A fantastic finale to the McDonnell cup when we played the final leg of the 36 hole competition in Ring Commons on Saturday.

With several players capable of putting great scores this was always going to be a close contest. The final placings were decided on a back nine count to separate the winner and runner up.

Winner Tommy McCann Net 96 [OB9]
R/Up Frank Hughes Net 96
Third place went to John Fitzpatrick with Net 99.

This year the pitch and Putt club have an additional competition which will became known as the George McDonnell memorial Cup.
The McDonnell family are natives of Skidoo Ballyboughal have been been members of the P&P club for over 35 years. Ann McDonnell who is a current member wanted to sponsor a tournament in memory of her brother the late George. Having lived most of their lives in Swords, George was huge supporter of gaelic footbal, the Dublin county team and Fingallians GAA club.
Ann specially commissioned a fantastic cup which was contested over four games starting on Saturday 1st October in Ballyboughal continuing on 8th October Laytown, 15th October Trim and the final game 22nd October in Ring Commons sports centre in Naul. A truly great competition for the members of Ballyboughal P&P club to contest and brought a great sense of community in remembering our friend George.

P&P Golf Challenge Winners

The annual Golf challenge took place to Balheary Golf Club Par 3 course on what was a glorious but very windy Saturday as gale force winds crossed the country.

This years winners was Team Capt Steven Rowe, Tommy McCann, Martin Cullen and Jim Gallagher with 61 Gross.

Runner up was team Capt Pat Hickey, Jimmy Browne and Maura Lynch with Gross 63.

A very competitive day with the following three teams on 64. A great experience for all once again to sample play on a golf course.
