The deal is very simple – There is a difference between local news and what is essentially business advertising.

It may not be the rental on a hall, but like any business or club, this site has overheads, running costs and expenses. Say no more. You get the gist and welcome to the year 2012.

If like us, you are doing your bit/a gig/ or club voluntarily and for the greater good obviously there is no greater pleasure we could take than to help you out in whatever way we can and logically we will only accept payment by way of lemon merangue pie, homemade if possible. Thanks in advance and yummy in my tummy !

On the other hand, if you are a business or simply running a gig that will make you a few bob [ie. it's commercial] and would like to have that business, gig, event or your companies news profiled here then we’ll ask for a donation to running costs of the site.

A donation ? a few bob, spondulas, some dosh, a buck, a clam, some dough, a few shillings, frogskins, duckets, the loot, licker, some bones, honk, lolly, moola -or- moolah, some readies or finally wonga.

Now you as a biz may say either

a] stuff that – or -
b] well that’s fair enough champ

If your answer is A] it means I have more time to walk Ballyboughal’s hedgerows with my daughter. If you’re answer is B] then that’s fair enough – and we might be able to throw a few bob towards the sites costs which Adrian and Peter have paid to date. Either or, I don’t really mind.

The sites intention was to be local news, information, where do I go, what to do on a Friday and who achieved what last week. If we can continue to do that and cover costs – I’ll be very pleased. At the moment it’s simply leaning far too much in favour of too much time and all of the money.

If we only spend a little less time doing the site, but can put more time into making the local news better – I’ll be a happy camper and the site will be a better place to visit.

Grow Your Own Garden Class

Straight from Peter’s Garden weblog…. another of his now famous garden classes is set to take place. Book it while you can. Comments over on Peters site only.

where: ballyboughal [just outside Swords, north Dublin]
when: saturday 21st August 2010
time: 9.30am – 3.30pm
cost: €75 – including morning tea, lunch and all materials
numbers limit: minimum of 8 and 12 people max

Who is it for:

If you don’t wish to farm your entire garden
or remortgage the house so you can garden full time
If don’t [or do] have an allotment
or you simply wish to gather the simple basics to get started
whether you have a window ledge or a small patio
or just wish to grow in pots on that amount of space
I’ll assume you have a life, possibly kids and a full time job
or just enough time in life between eastenders and the 9 o’clock news.

A similar set up to the previous GYO class, the theory is that in one session you will go home with enough skills to be able to look after yourself from a grow your own – without the use of a tractor – point of view

Swords Mummers

There was one night at the Fingal Folk Club were the Swords Mummers did a performance on stage. I didn’t know what a mummer was being very honest, but this I liked. In a funny sort of way, it was a little possibly, embarrassing that I did not know of this so very old tradition. I asked Ronnie [el presidenté] to send me on some information.

In short and for want a definition of some sort, here’s my take on it… you know the way the kids call around the doors at Haloween all dressed up, well, this as far as I can gather is something similar, except they are adults and arrive with a pre prepared act.

Here’s what Ronnie Sent me:

Among the ancient customs of Fingal that of “Mumming” at Christmas-tide still holds a place. A band of Christmas mummers, usually consists of about a dozen or more young men, all of whom wear disguises of some sort.

For these disguises old clothing, shirts as overalls outside the ordinary clothing, home-made comical head- dresses of plaited straw, and masks are worn. Failing the latter, faces are blackened with burnt cork, or else whitened with flour in accordance with the role to be enacted.

For several days previous to Christmas, the mummers meet in some friendly dwelling, house or barn, where they devote their time to preparing the various disguises and rehearsing for their appearance in public on “Saint Stephen’s Night”.

Making the rounds the mummers do not enter any houses in a body.

The group come to a halt outside the door of the domicile being visited and only one mummer (The leader) known as Rim Rhyme enters the house.

This he does without giving any indication of his presence outside the door by knocking or otherwise. The door, if closed, is generally secured by a latch only, this is boldly raised by Rim Rhyme who pushes it back to its full extent and strides into the centre of the dwelling proclaiming in a loud voice, in a chanting strain.

Here comes I Rim Rhyme…

And so we begin a portrayal of good over evil with the characters following in hot pursuit.

Prince George the plunderer, battles with Rim Rhyme and falls foul to his sword. Then call in the doctor to cue all ills, The doc will call on Joe the butcher who will skin a cow. Slick slack with his family on his back will then summon the devil who will call upon The Wren.

Before we can say boo! Tom the fool will emerge to wish us all happy cheer and command this mummers band to steal your hearts away.

Grow Your Own – In Dublin – Course

Details:

After my talk with the GIY group and then after the last course was covered recently in the Irish Independent by Susan Daly….I don’t want to be farmer. I shall rephrase. I don’t wish to remortgage the house so I can garden full time. I don’t have time for an allotment and I don’t wish to grow enough vegetables to feed an entire village. If that is you..? or you wish to gather the simple basics to get started then… this is for you.

A little more concise in set up than the previous GYO class but with the exactly the same subject and content covered, the theory is is one session you will go home with enough skills to become self sufficient in looking after yourself from a grow your own – without the use of a tractor

Whether you have a window ledge, a small patio or just wish to grow in pots on that amount of space, bearing in mind that there just enough time in life between eastenders and the 9 o’clock news.

rugby…? in ballyboughal….?!!

You would think with the recent success of the Junior GAA team that rugby would be the furthest thing from anyones mind [in Ballyboughal at least...] at this moment in time….

But over the weekend at The Pavillions Shopping Centre in Swords, Swords Rugby Club continued their Fingal-wide recruitment drive with a two-day promotion at the retail centre and members of the club were on hand to discuss any information required. I stopped by to say hello to the lads.

It’s been a long time since I played rugby… or hurling for that matter and being honest I didn’t realise just how big an outfit Swords Rugby Club was….

There’s the men’s teams at 1st, 2nd and Over-35s level and for the younger there’s now the first-ever Under-13 and under 9 team. There’s also Under-12 and Under 10 levels.

A mini rugby launch is scheduled to take place on Sunday, September 27th in Brackenstown and the club’s Under-19 team will also been in action, managed by Martin Troy and coached by Fran McKevitt, Derek Brennan and Jamie Gormly.

It’s shaping up to be a big season at all levels and the coaching ranks have been further strengthened with Fran, Fiachra Coll and Simon Lear being the latest to undertake coaching courses.

Swords RFC president, Alan Butler said.

Our preparations couldn’t have gone better so far and it all bodes well for the coming year, as well as the future,We have had an influx of new players and our youth development officer, Jamie Gormly, is back coaching in the local schools once again.
Special thanks must go to the Pavilions for facilitating our promotions weekend, which will be a great chance for anyone, of any age or experience, who is interested in playing or supporting rugby, to sign up and get involved.

what am i doing..

Manchester Unitied Soccer School 2

This week saw the second round of Manchester United Soccer camp for 2008. It was hosted at Swords Celtic F.C and ran from Sunday to Tuesday. Kyle and a few of his team mates attended.

At the last camp all the kids were covered in muck form head to toe. Lucky the weather was hot and sunny. Mind you, Kyle did complain about the odd bit of sun burn but, you know there is no telling them to use sun cream (even if you pack it) its uncool. Like us all, they learn the hard way.

All the kids really enjoy themselves, each took on board what the coaches had to say. The set up was brilliant. The coaches added a little bit of a boot camp tone. The result was it ran like clock work without delays.

I heard Paul Darcy invited the coaches to the Over 35′s training session on Monday night which ended in a match against the U14′s – sorry I don;t have the result. If you know please leave a comment.

I managed to get down to capture a few minutes of the last training session, enjoy.
