It appears that on Saturday the 24th of July, that’s this Saturday, the karaoke will return to O’Connors pub.

Call it what you may, I know it’s easier for any pub not to bother their barney doing anything at all, whether it costs a few bob or not. The other side is the karaoke I’m sure will only return, again and again if it proves successful – for the punter and the bar, obviously.

It really great to see the lads of the local public house Colm, Mark and David put the extra slice of onion in the sandwiches…. so to speak Well done. Bulaidh bós. It’s appreciated.

Anyhoo, if it is anything like the reports that came from the John Kenny night ‘this pub is going to the dogs’ night out….. and these JB boys are the same people who did it that night….. I think I might just bring my hurling helmet and an umbrella…. just in case !

The gates of the pitch and putt club were open and I popped in and took a walk of the course. In there I met President of Ballyboughal Ronald Delaney and whilst it was ladies day a few of the lads had dropped by to have a quick game.

Located in the heart of the village of Ballyboughal in North County Dublin about 12km from Swords on the Naul road. The course is a 9 hole challenge with sand traps at almost all the approaches to the greens. Opening times Mon-Sun  9am until dark.

Membership is available from any committee member or at the club and the P&P Club encourages all sections of our community to participate and doesn’t discriminate against age, gender or nationality.

The first club competition for 2010 is the O’Connor Cup which will be held on St. Patrick’s day and is open to all.

Never played before…. pop your head down say hello and beat a couple of balls around Go on! The weathers nice and the wife wants you out of the house anyway. You’ve been getting on her nerves and the vacuum cleaner needs to run across the new carpet you made a mess of….. Or at least that’s what I’ll be told

You may be thinking small town pub brutal music ? [I say, You may be....] That’s what I kind of thought when I first heard.

Personally, I ‘don’t like as much’ the karaoke machine type cd musicians…. I prefer the really good guitar player who can hold his own… And in fairness 99% of the time that’s exactly what I’ve got when I’ve gone down on a Saturday.

My favourite on this list is probably Harry Prendergast as a by the way

It’s held in the left hand side of the pub down beside the fire. Some sit near and listen to the music, others the right hand side where it can still be heard.

Either or… it’s great to see it, it’s brilliant to hear it and I have to give the lads credit it creates a nice bit of atmosphere that’s not overpowering… but just right.

That aside it is always the people that make a place…. that and a good pint of Guinness   Of course if you have never been to Ballyboughal…. often spelt Ballyboghil amongst many variations…. I’ve made life very easy for you

Moaning all in Ballyboughal, it official from the horses mouth, written on Moses’ tablet, cast in stone, she opens on next Monday 20th Oct.

...this time its really happening

some thought it would never happen. some thought it was never possible. In a town where the drop, the craic, the entire knowledge of what encapsulated community spirit and held it so tightly within its grasp had been left to wander idle for over 2 years…. It is, now, on the verge of what some may consider akin to poetry being given rock and roll status… a Hendrix like status, The Jim Morrison of Ballyboughal maybe… ? It is to be reborn, re-released, relaunched… it is to open!

The reality is people walk through the village and some don’t know their neighbours. O Connors pub was a mythical establishment that elimanted any mysteriousness over who, what or how that man was related. In one evening a family tree was discussed and on the back of the same beer mat the relativity theory was unravelled and reconstructed using that of a DNA molecule [deoxy-ribo-nucleic-acid].

What will there be? What’s it like? Who? What? Where and when? The rumours have started – but there’s only one way to put Marys, cousins, uncles, brothers, sister-in-law now known as Jim to the wrong…. I guess you’ll have to pop in and check it out for yourself!

One thing is for sure. Ballyboughal has something now that was lost for a while. A place where people new to the village can meet. A centre. A sense of community. A place to meet. A heart and above all a soul.
