Its almost 20 years since I’ve played a real game of Badminton. If you played and liked it, you’ve probably thought about how you’d like to take it up again. I’m my case this was very true. I love the gym, its a great way to unwind, but my current gym has the same amount of get up and go as a grave yard. When I eventually go back to my old gym in Swords I’ll be in pain, but thats my bag, as is playing badminton.
Badminton is a great social sport, you don’t have the loneliness of a long distance runner or swimmer. You get to run your yourself into the ground from many directions – its fun.
The rules of the game have changed slightly since I last played. You can win a point once they shuttle hits the ground. This really makes the game a lot faster and more competitive as you no longer have to win the serve.
I walked onto the court last week with my new racquet, not really knowing what to expect. After a few foul serves and missing a few clears I felt as if I clicked into auto pilot. My first real smash almost put my neck out, then I found myself bending and stretching in ways that my body has not done in a long time.
The next day I felt some pain from the over stretching which reminds you your alive the next morning.
Are you interested in playing Badminton? The local club is in Rolestown community hall which consists of 3 courts on a wooden floor which is a huge bonus. Runs on Monday and Wednesdays evenings from 8pm – 10pm.
I’m sure they are always looking for new members and I’ll be encouraging friends to come along. Its a laugh and a bit of exercise, what more could you want. Sadly I’m away in London for the rest of the week so I’ll be missing this Wednesdays night of play.
